Voor de voorstelling in Rusland stonden we allemaal voor een grote uitdaging. 6 april was de laatste show in Zweden en 7 april hadden we show in Moskou. Om dat voor elkaar te krijgen zijn Steven, Dennis en Midori een paar dagen eerder al naar Moskou gegaan om alles voor ons op te bouwen. 's Nachts na de laatste voorstelling in Zweden zijn we naar het vliegveld van Stockholm gereden (4 uur), hebben daar een paar uurtjes in een hotel geslapen om om tien uur 's ochtends naar Moskou te vliegen. Door het tijdsverschil kwamen we om half twee 's middags aan. Moskou is een grote, erg drukke stad, dus we deden er twee uur over om van het vliegveld naar het theater te komen. We speelden dit keer gelukkig in een ander theater dan twee jaar geleden: dit gebouw was modern, groot en schoon. Om vier uur waren we in het theater. Ik had me op het ergste voorbereid: Rusland staat niet bekend om de hypermoderne technische apparatuur die ze hebben (behalve misschien in het leger of de ruimtevaart). Maar op het zijtoneel lagen keurig op een rijtje 24 zender microfoons en in de zaal stond een mixer die je zelfs in Nederland zelden tegenkomt, omdat hij zo groot en nieuw en luxe en duur is dat weinigen hem kunnen betalen. Iedereen ging meteen als een gek aan de slag. De drummers gingen de drums stemmen en opspannen, Maarten hielp Midori met het stellen van de laatste dingen, Erik kroop achter zijn slagschip in een poging het ding te begrijpen en ik rende met de door ons zelf meegenomen microfoons over het podium om ze aan te sluiten. Een snelle soundcheck en om half acht begon de show. 3,5 uur nadat wij binnen waren gekomen!!! Voor mensen die niet in het theatervak zitten, klinkt dit misschien niet zo bijzonder, maar ik kan je vertellen: zeker in Rusland beginnen we normaal gesproken om acht uur 's ochtends met het opbouwen. Natuurlijk was een heleboel werk al gedaan door de drie mannen die voor ons uit waren gereisd, maar daarvan kenden twee de show niet, was slechts 1 van hun een ervaren technicus en de Japanner die mee was deed voor het eerst zelf het licht. Maar we hebben het gered, mede dankzij de goede voorbereiding en medewerking van de Russische technici.
De tweede voorstellingsdag was erg relaxt. Om vier uur 's middags kwamen we binnen, op ons dooie gemak nog wat aanpassingen gemaakt en vervolgens show. Omdat alle technische apparatuur lokaal was ingehuurd, hoefden wij alleen de drums in te pakken en die in te laden. En hier begint het spannende verhaal.
De truck stond net buiten het theater terrein langs de weg geparkeerd. Om te kunnen laden, moest de truck het terrein op. De corrupte Russische bewakers wilden hem echter niet doorlaten als hij niet een bepaald bedrag zou betalen. Een van de stagehands vertelde ons dat er een andere poort is om het terrein op te komen. Dus de truck draait om en komt via de achteringang het terrein op. De bewakers waren uiteraard "not amused". Maar goed, de truck stond op z'n plek. Nu moest de laaddeur nog open: zo'n standaard roldeur met electrische bediening. De bewakers vonden dat we niet mochten laden, dus de deur mocht niet open. Dus sloten ze de spanning naar die roldeur af. Maar zulke deuren hebben altijd een handbediening in geval van nood. Dus wij gooien de deur open en beginnen kisten naar buiten te duwen. Acht man bewaking vliegt op ons af en heel even lijkt het erop dat er klappen gaan vallen. We mogen niet verder laden. Het spel wordt op hoger niveau uitgespeeld en er wordt (naar de informatie die ik gekregen heb) 5000 euro aan de theaterdirecteur betaald. Wij mogen laden. Maar de bewakers bedenken iets nieuws. In de schermutseling die ontstond toen wij begonnen met kisten naar buiten duwen, duwde een van de bewakers een van onze crew licht aan de kant. Nu beweerden zij dat wij hen weggeduwd zouden hebben. Er werden een auto dwars voor de truck geparkeerd zodat we er niet uit konden. Wij hadden niet heel veel haast om weg te gaan, want de laatste kist moest nog naar beneden en geladen worden, dus we lieten het zo. Overal om ons heen liepen Russen met elkaar te onderhandelen. Wij moesten dan maar onze verontschuldigingen aanbieden, dan zouden ze die auto's verplaatsen. Geen denken aan. Erik komt op het idee om de trailer voor de laaddeur (de enige van het pand) te zetten, de truck af te koppelen (de truck alleen kon wel door de barriere heen) trailer op slot en zoek het maar uit. Pech voor de drie vrachtwagens die die nacht nog geladen zouden moeten worden en de twee wagens die de volgende dag gelost zouden moeten worden. Daar hadden ze nog even niet over nagedacht. Dus toen ons laatste kistje beneden was, was de auto weggezet en nadat we de trailer deuren hadden gesloten, kon de chauffeur zonder problemen het terrein af rijden. Leuk man, Rusland!
