Een echte sporter ben ik nooit geweest. Klasgenoten van mij op de middelbare school deden aan schaatsen, wielrennen, hardlopen en ik zat op paardrijden. Bij hoog en bij laag hield ik vol dat dat een sport was, wat ook zeker zo is. Maar twee uurtjes per week paardrijden is nou niet direct conditie verhogend. Toen ik verhuisde naar Amsterdam werd sporten ongewild, onbedoeld en ongemerkt uit mijn leven verbannen. Na een paar jaar tien minuten fietsen per dag (5 minuten naar school en 5 minuten terug naar huis, met gevaar voor eigen leven door tramrails en over de Dam) wilde ik toch gaan Sporten. Op een paar oude gympen heb ik welgeteld anderhalve week bijna ieder ochtend een rondje om de lauriergracht gehobbeld (echt rennen kon je het niet noemen). Maar dat verwaterde al snel. Toen het nieuwe Marnixbad klaar was nam ik voor om in ieder geval twee keer in de week te gaan zwemmen. Ik kocht een 15-baden polsbandje en zwom inderdaad minimaal twee keer per week heen en weer tussen zo'n 30 andere zwemmers. Het bad lag iedere ochtend behoorlijk vol. Alle banen waren van elkaar gescheiden door de welbekende drijvende lijnen. Links de langzaamste, rechts de snelste. Ik wist mij in een paar weken tijd op te werken tot de een na snelste baan. In slagorde achter elkaar aan zwommen we dus in feite op een halve baan, want tegemoetkomende zwemmers moesten ook de ruimte hebben. Het was even wennen, maar snel genoeg creeer je een manier om toch je eigen tempo te kunnen zwemmen. Ook op tour heb ik het zwemmen redelijk vol gehouden: in iedere stad een zwembad opgezocht.
Nu alles na het gedoe van de afgelopen maanden weer wat beter gaat, heb ik het zwemmen weer opgepakt. Dus zo'n twee a drie ochtenden in de week samen met moeders naar het openlucht bad in Uithuizen. Waar je in het Marnixbad een systeem moet ontwikkelen om 30 zwemmers te ontwijken, moet je dat in dit bad doen om 12 zwemmers te ontwijken. Er is namelijk een groot verschil tussen deze twee baden. In het marnixbad komen mensen om te zwemmen, om baantjes te trekken, om conditie op te bouwen, om te sporten. In De Dinge komen daar nog een aantal dingen bij. Mensen komen hier naast de lichamelijke oefening ook voor het sociale gedeelte. In het zwembad liggen geen lijnen, je kunt dus kriskras overal zwemmen waar je wilt. Nou word er over het algemeen wel gewoon van voor naar achter gezwommen, maar dit gebeurd in tweetallen en liever nog in 3 of in 4-tallen. Dit gebeurd omdat op die manier het nuttige met het aangename kan worden verenigd: in plaats van bij een kopje koffie in de woonkamer worden de laatste roddels tijdens het zwemmen uitgewisseld. Twee vliegen in een klap. Maar praten en zwemmen zorgt ervoor dat er niet erg snel wordt gezwommen en met vier man op 1 lijn zwemmen, dan moet de snelheid uiteraard aangepast worden aan de traagste, die ook vaak het meeste te vertellen heeft. Het effect is te vergelijken met vier vrachtwagens naast elkaar op een snelweg. Geen auto die er nog langs kan, terwijl voor de vrachtwagens de weg leeg is. Mijn moeder en ik spreken nu dan ook over de hoeveelheid theekopjes en kranten in het water, en we proberen onze zwemtijden zoveel mogelijk aan te passen, zodat we niet in spitsuur terecht komen. Ik vraag mij daarnaast af of ik de enige 20-er ben die in dit zwembad zwemt.... De gemiddelde leeftijd van de zwemmers 's ochtends word door mij behoorlijk naar beneden gehaald....
